Suggest Treatment For Disc Herniation And Numbness In The Right Arm

Have disc herniation at c5-c6 & c6-c7 ( have had MRI and EMG and copy of report) Numbness in right arm down into ring finger and little finger. Numbness on top of hand and wrist. Little or no strength in making and holding a fist. Has been going on for about 5 weeks. Pain is not main issue at this moment but numbness and lost of function in right arm and hand is major concern( hard to pull wallet out of my back pocket). Wait or move ahead with cervical disc fusion as recommended by spine surgeon?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are having numbness in the right arm with loss of function. You are suggested to get clinically assessed by a Neurologist/ Neuro Surgeon. Get blood tests, Nerve conduction tests, Nerve biopsy & Imaging (X-Ray, CT, EEG, MRI, ETC) tests done urgently.

Numbness and weakness are commonly due to disorders of the brain & spinal cord. Neglect may trigger central nervous system issues like MS or stroke. Disc herniation can be treated with NSAIDS, ice & heat therapy. Physical therapy under a Physiotherapist is effective.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
