Suggest Treatment For Cough In A Child Suffering From Asthma

My grandson has been diagnosed with asthma just after birth. He uses inhalers. He is now 3 years young and has a terrible cough mainly during the night. Due to this cough he often sounds as if he is choking and consequently vomits. He looks very healthy and is always happy. He also had pneumonia at age 2 which went undiagones for one month. Only when my son queeried the results of x ray taken came this to light. He has been referred to a peadiatrian but is still on the waiting list. Any suggestions?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Basically, it is a diagnosed case of asthma on regular inhalers, now having significant cough at night. Here the possibilities are:
1. Poor control of asthma- needing up-gradation of treatment
2. GERD (backward reflex of stomach contents back into food pipe / esophagus- need acid suppression and diet modification
3. Depending on prevalence in your area, this may be an unrelated infection like pertussis / mycoplasma- easily treatable with antibiotics

If I were your treating doctor, I will ask you to video record an episode to see whether its pertussis, and after examining the chest will decide further course of action. Your doctor will guide you. Meanwhile, ensure all asthma measures like avoidance of dust in room, proper technique of inhaler use and make sure the canister is nit empty.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam TK, Pediatrician
