Suggest Treatment For Bloating And Distended Stomach

Hello, my mother , who just turned 65 years old just got Medicare (now she is going to go to a Dr.) She complains of bloating, and her stomach is distended, constipation (which has been for several years) More recently she feels like the upper quadrant is giving her problems. She said her blood pressure is higher than the norm and she said that she felt like she had a band around her breast , even though she is not wearing a bra.

Hi,
I understand your concern.
* You mother seems to have all the symptoms may arise from due to constipation.
Due to aging the intestinal movements are lessened, as a result food lies in bowel for a longer time so it's liquid content gets absorbed . this results in dry stools & constipation.
Longer stay of stools in bowels results in gas formation& creates floating. Gas being lighter floats in upper GI tract & causes more discomfort in upper quadrant.. It pushes the diaphragm up & leads to feeling of a band around breast.
THe management consists of - diet with fibers & lot of water/ Mild laxative at bed time / walking exercise daily/ Enzyme preparations for good digestion.
* Your mother also has High BP- it's adviseble to get her checked up by a heart specialist-specially for her chest symptoms.
* In old age, degenerative spondlitis is common. Thorasic spne examination to exclude spondilitis is advised.
