Suggest Treatment For Afib When On Metoprolol Tartrate
Thank you. My wife has been diagnosed with afib and is taking metoprolol tartrate 25mg 1xd; 1/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm. She just (in last 45 min) experienced fluttering in her chest. I took her vitals and they were-BP 172/131 w/HR 85. The BP machine stated an irregular heart beat. She had already taken her usual daily dose of metoprolol (only med she is on) and I gave her another 1/2 tablet (12.5mg). She rested for 35min. and I again took her vitals. They were BP134/82-HR 96 and again bp machine stated an irregular heart beat. She is now resting. My question is...what course of action should I be taking now.
Hello, Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query. I appreciate your concern for your wife. Metoprolol doesn't convert a chronic atrial fibrillation. It only controls the heart rate. Her symptoms are more related to anxiety and she should relax and practice stress relieving measures. If she is confirmed to have atrial fibrillation, she should be on anti coagulant to prevent thromboembolism. Take care
