Suggest Treatment For Acid Relux

I've just stopped taking omeprozole after taking for about 6 months. I'm trying to take the recommended 4 month break from it and looking for an alternative for acid reflux - I have changed my diet to see if that will help the acid reflux. Currently I am taking Pepcid once a day.

Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic!
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

The breif description you have described is suggestive of chronic acid reflux probably for long duration. We can call this as GERD(Gastro Esophageal Reflex Disease ).
Since you are taking break from omeprazole you can try the following aalternatives.
1.You can try ranitidine twice a day in empty stomach,The effects are little bit lower than omeprazole but would provide good symptomatic relief. You can also try newer congeners like famotidine which is more efficient.
2.Sucralfate syrup can be taken thrice a day,is also used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflex .
3.Colloidal bismuth and misoprostol can also be tried, but they are more effective for active ulcer rather than reflex.

Do the following diet and lifestyle changes to reduce the symptoms of acide reflex
:-
1.Avoid spicy food stuffs and junk foods.
2.Quit smoking and have a check on your alcohol consumption.
3.Avoid unwanted stresses and practice relaxation techniques like yoga and meditations.
4.Avoid eating immediately before bed.
5.If Your Heartburn Is Worse When Lying Down,Raise the head of your bed so that your chest level is higher than your feet, thus reflex is prevented.
You have to consult your physician for proper follow up,A GI endoscopy may be required in severe cases.

Hope I have answered your query.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
Dr.Shinas
