Suggest Treatment For Alzheimer With Refusal Of Swallowing

MOTHER-IN-LAW IS 82. DON'T KNOW IF SHE HAS ALZHEIMER'S OR PD. HER GRANDMA, MOM AND BROTHER DIED OF PD. HER FIRST COUSIN HAS IT NOW ABOUT SAME AGE. SHE SEEMS TO HAVE DECIDED TO STOP EATING AND WAS HOSPITALIZED ON MONDAY DUE TO EXTREME DEHYDRATION. HAS BEEN ON IV. WILL CONTINUE ON PALLIATIVE CARE IN SKILLED NURSING WHERE SHE HAS LIVED. BUT IF SHE REFUSES TO EAT...HOW LONG ON AVERAGE WILL SHE LIVE? WE ARE ON OPPOSITE COASTS. THE DOCTORS HAVE INSERTED AN NG TUBE. SHE PULLED OUT. COULD NOT REINSERT DUE TO SINUS BLOCK AND HER LEVEL OF TRAUMA OVER THE INSERTION. G TUBE SEEMS TO BE OUT IN ADVANCED DIRECTIVE. WE ARE PREPARING TO TRAVEL RIGHT AWAY, BUT LOOKING FOR ANSWERS FOR OUR TIMING'S SAKE. SHE HAS ALSO BEEN ON SMALL DOSES OF MORPHINE AND ATIVAN. HAVE USED LARGER GUAGE CATHETER FOR FLUSH. THAT IS BEING CHANGED TO MAKE HER MORE COMFORTABLE. SEEMS TO REFUSE TO SWALLOW, BUT HAS INVOLUNTARY SWALLOW REFLEX. BEFORE NEW GUAGE CATH, WAITING FOR HER BLADDER TO EVACUATE ON IT'S OWN. MY DAD HAS JUST PASSED WITH PD. WE WENT THROUGH SMOOTH MUSCLE FAILURE WITH HIM. IS THIS THE SAME FOR HER? SORRY FOR JUMPING AROUND IN TEXT. HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND MY POINTS. THANK YOU.

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
It seems she is terminally ill with refusal to eat for personal reasons. Depending on medication and counseling, if her condition improves, she can live longer.
However, as the situation stands, if there is secondary infection and septicemia, if she refuses treatment, difficult to live longer.
82 is not a very old age. Situation requires active response from family to identify reasons to remove the compounding factor.
Take care.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
