Suggest Remedy For Severe Acid Reflux With History Of Achalasia

I am a female, age 76, in reasonably good health, but lately I ve been having severe attacks of acid indigestion. Sometimes, an anti-acid tablet can help. but sometimes it doesn t even begin to touch the pain. Yesterday while on a short trip, I had a bout that was so painful I vomited twice. I also was kept feeling I was going to faint. None of the symptons subsided till I was able to get home for a decent night s rest in bed. By the way, this is just a side-issue, but I have achalasia that I manage mainly with hot water.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the exacerbation of symptoms of acid reflux with achalasia after short trip is related to food or drug induced GI discomfort most likely. My valuable suggestions to cope up with the condition are:
- Dietary measures to avoid all spices, non veg, junk food and only adhere to bland, vegan diet
- Manage to have soft, smooth bowel evacuation on regular basis if required use bulk forming laxative
- Prefer higher functioning proton pump inhibitor as rabeprazole or else against simple antacid as ranitidine
- Avoid stress, anxiety
- No further travelling till recovery
- Keep the head end of bed elevated for 30 degrees when resting
- Avoid prolong fasting or over eating
- Keep the stomach empty by 25% of satiety value
- Chew your food thoroughly
- Eat small, frequent meals
- Have sound regular sleep of 7 hours
- Avoid smoking or alcohol if consuming

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
