Iam 59yrs old weighing 81kg, height 1.63m, diagnosed with hypoglycemia based on symptoms and fasting blood sugar test result of 76mg/dl fasting and 87mg/dl after eating 2hrs after. Also lipid profile test showed low HDL. what can i do to get out of the crisis. Iv been placed on a diet but oftentime, i feel heavy on d legs and head which weakens me whenever it occurs. Has ampiclox and coartem recommended for malaria and whitlow respectively any negative effect on d ailment?

Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM. As per the history, you have been put on Artesunate (Artemether Lumefantrine), Ampicilin and Cloxacilin for malaria and whitlow. Artesunates are usually prescribed for a P. falciparum malaria, although treatment guideline for malaria varies depending upon the organism and its drug resistance status in a particular geographical area. However, if you have P. falciparum malaria, you should know that it can actually manifest with numerous symptoms ranging from fever, to diarrhoea, to even jaundice and renal and neurologic complications. It can even cause hypoglycemia. Even artesunate therapy has reported side effects like hypoglycemia or fluctuating BP levels. The "heavy" feeling in hed and legs can also be due to a falciparum malaria or complications like hemolysis or some metabolic complication or fluid overload. You haven't clearly mentioned your area of residence, any history of recent travel to any malaria endemic area, the particular type of malaria for which you are taking medications. Furthermore, regarding your whitlow, again you need to specify whether it is a herpetic whitlow or not. You haven't also mentioned the actual level of your HDL. A full report of lipid profile is needed to come to a conclusion. Finally, the blood sugar reports provided by you are not at all alarming. A fasing sugar of 75 mg/dl is normal and a 2 hr PP sugar of 87 mg/dl is almost low normal. I think you continue to have the medications prescribed to you. Have a fasting lipid profile, and liver function test done. Continue to have a healthy diet. Also check your hemoglobin level and white cell count to check for anaemia and superimposed bacterial infection. With all these, you can consult your local doctor or write back to us. Regards.
