Hi, so today I had my ultrasound done. And I was told my baby has a hole in his heart. I am very worried, they are sending me to a cardiovascular expert. The doctor told me today that sometimes the hole closes as soon as there born but that they wanted to make sure it was nothing bad. I.would just like to know what advice you can give me. Or i guess most importantly to me would be what does this mean or what could this be. Is it serious?

OBGYN, Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Dr. Prabha 's Response
Hi i assume you are having either an asd or vsd which we classify as isolated hole in the heart which closes at birth when foetal circlation changes into adult circulation once the lungs starts functioning. YThe functional changes happen after baby is born and any assessment will be done by physical exam and echo after birth. Mean while at birth neonatologist will be pre informed to be on stand by if oxygen saturation is low for any nicu stand by arrangements. Hope i made myself clear. If the scan finding is asmall hole chances of closing is high but can be ascertained only afterbirth.your cardiovascular surgeon will be able to shed more light depending on the numbers and detailes of your scan
