Suggest Remedy For Hard Lumps On Back Of Neck

Hello. For the past few years I have had these two, very hard lumps in the back of my neck directly on each side of my spine. They are right below the hairline at the top of my neck surrounding my spine. They are very hard and I am not able to move them. I have had them for a few years. I am 24 and am very athletic. These bumps seem to cause direct pain to my temples causing very bad headaches. When I was in high school, I dealt with severe headaches and my chiropractor suggested having a saline injection into these bumps to help separate the mass, however I never had that procedure done. They seem to bother me more when I am lethargic and tired. I have been trying for years different stretches, rubbing, and icing my neck but it is always a temporary fix. Please help! Thank you!!

Hi,

Lump on the back of the neck is usually a lymph node ( posterior group ), which can be swollen because of some viral infection. However, it can be a lipoma ( lump of fat), furuncle ( boil ), or sebaceous cyst ( swelling due to blocked gland ). Or rarely lymphoma ( a disorder of blood where swelling can be firm or hard ).

See in most of the above problems the swelling is usually soft ( except lymphoma as I mentioned ).

In your case since the swelling is there from past so many years and it is hard and immobile, I strongly feel that you should get some investigations done for it to find the exact diagnosis and plan proper treatment.

Get some test like- complete blood count, ESR, ultrasound of the area, and tissue diagnosis of the swelling ( they take a part or whole of the swelling and examine under microscope - called as FNAC or biopsy ).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Milinda Gupta
