Suggest Remedies For Swelling And Tightness In Both Sides Of Knee Post An Injury

I hurt my left knee two weeks ago. There continues to be swelling on both sides swelling on outside of knee is more bubble like while swelling on interior covers a larger area but not as severe. The knee has also started to lock up at times. After the initial injury it seemed to be getting better but over the last several days it has gotten worse. Should I give it more time or is it time to visit my doctor.

Hi,
I have seen your query and understand your concern. You said that you have hurt your knee 2 weeks ago and then gradually you developed swelling of your knee and it started locking up as well.

Our knee is supported by certain structures called ligaments on four sides to give stability to the knee. They connect different bones of the knee. They are ACL (Anterior cruciate ligament), MCL (Medial collateral ligament), LCL (Lateral collateral ligament). There are also certain structures called medial and lateral meniscus supporting the knee.

ACL injuries cause locking and swelling within 6 hours after injury. Medial and lateral meniscal injuries cause swelling and locking after 6 hours after injury. As you have symptoms so late, you must have had a meniscal injury.

Please visit your orthopedician. He will perform a test called Mcmurray's test(a type of physical exam) to confirm the diagnosis.

But no need to worry at all. This injured is managed conservatively. Just limit the movements of your knee. Take some rest. Don't over exert yourself.

Apply some ice over the area. Take some pain killers like aceclofenac with paracetamol combination 2 times a day after meals to reduce pain and swelling. Take pantoprazole 2 times a day before meals to avoid side effect of acidity caused by aceclofenac. Take the drugs for 2 to 3 days. You can also opt for physiotherapy.

If the symptoms persist despite conservative treatment, surgical correction might become necessary. So, just visit your orthopedician who will give you a good treatment plan and does regular follow up to monitor resolution of symptoms.
