Suggest Remedies For Fluctuating BP Levels In An Elderly Man

Dad is 92...polio survivor...health is excellent except BP fluctuates like crazy. In any given day it is 85/48 and he has an altered mental state...after a few hours it shoots up to 200/100!! We treat with benazepril(only med is taking) at least twice a week, sometimes more, he has episodes of complete unconsciousness that lasts 3-4 hours...BP is normal. Doctors have no answer but to have him lay down! ER Doctor thought he might be having seizures, possibly associated with PPS. We tried Kepra but it knocked him out for the entire day. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I can see that your father is having multiple health problems including:
- fluctuating bp: should get a complete cardiac check-up in order to evaluate his heart, and blood vessels status for proper treatment
(EKG, echocardiogram, Doppler ultrasound of body blood vessels)

- altered mental state (most probably due to fluctuating bp), however, neurologist to consult further to determine the real problem. EEG or even ct-scan of head and brain might be performed for proper diagnosis

- age 92 years: although in excellent health status, the metabolic and body processes can be reduced by age. However, there must get various blood tests for proper diagnosis and treatment (complete blood count, blood electrolytes, urine analysis, liver/kidney function test, blood sugar levels, etc.)

After we get all tests reports, we should analyze and then can run into final conclusions.

Discuss this further with his caring doctor.
Keep monitoring blood pressure and sugar levels, record the results for reference.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
