Suggest Precautions Needed To Take Before Thyroid Test
My thyroid levels have been different the entire year. I need to go in and get a new blood test to check my thyroid levels. I asked my doctor if I needed to fast, take my medicine before the blood test, and if I should test in the morning. I received a response of "Yes" to all three. Is this normal procedure?
Hello and welcome tu HCM! I do understand your situation and i will try to give you the proper information. When in levothyroxine the hormonal level should be checked not before 6 weeks after changing the dose. The day you are going to do the hormonal level you should not take the tablet, or you can check the hormones 4 hours after you have taken the tablet (the first way is more reliable). The hormonal thyroid status is not influenced by the food, so that day you may have breakfast, but if you prefer the first line (not to take the tablet that day) you should not eat because you may do the hormonal examination than take the tablet and after 30 min eat breakfast. If you prefer to wait 4 hours after you have taken the tablets than it is not important if you have eaten or not. Hope you understood my advices. Best regards, Dr.M.Guni
