Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was recently prescribed YOSPRALA to replace the low dose aspirin (1x/day) and Emeprozole (2x/day). The directions say to take YOSPRALA sixty minutes before a meal. Since I usually take the aspirin before going to bed, and the ememprozole in the morning before breakfast or lunch, WHEN should I take the yosprala? [The aspirin was recommended following a TIA. The emeprozole is for my acid reflux.]
What they are basically aiming for in Yosprala when they say at least sixty minutes before a meal, is an empty stomach. This timing is to optimise absorption of the medication, because food reduces the efficacy of the omeprazole. The aspirin portion is designed with a delayed release, so that the omeprazole has a chance to work and decrease acid secretion before the aspirin effect kicks in.
I would prefer the pre-breakfast option if you have the time to wait sixty minutes before your breakfast, because the food will also help to reduce the aspirin effect on the stomach. However, if that is not practical, bedtime is fine as well. Note that you have to make sure that your bedtime is at least four hours after your dinner so that the stomach has time to empty out before you take the Yosprala.
Hope this helps, and please let me know if you have further questions.
Regards, Dr. Teh
