Suggest Complications Of Hole In Aorta
I have a friend who was just diagnosed with a hole in the aorta. He was admitted after describing bloating, indigestion, chest pains, etc. Had respiratory failure shortly after cardiac testing. Placed on ventilator, lungs full of fluid. After diagnosis awaiting surgery.How difficult will this be to repair?

Unfortunately, not all patients are candidates for surgery. A patient will need to be able to withstand the stresses introduced by surgery. If it is determined that a patient will be unable to tolerate surgery, medical management will be the patient's best option. If surgeon has decided to dio surgery mortality and complication levels are as high as 15% ,
mortality increases if=
Age > 70
Abrupt onset of chest pain
Low blood pressure or shock at presentation
Kidney failure before surgery
Decreased pulse
Abnormal EKG, especially one concerning for heart attack
Heart attack
Previous aortic valve replacement
Possible stroke
a RISK TO BENIFIT RATIO TO BE COMPARED

hi,
hole in aorta is probably a patent ductus arteriosus. The treatment depends upon size of the hole, if small in size then it can be closed using minor procedure. if the size is large then open surgery is needed. Now first priority is to stabilize him and then to operate. Hope he could make it.
