Suggest Cause For Whitish String In Eye

For a couple days now, I have felt like there is something in my eye. It feels like sand but I don't see anything in there. I bought some refresh but it doesn't seem to help. I often get a whitish, stringy thing in my eye as well. Thought this was it but I can't get it out. What is going on? Why won't it go away. I can barely see at times.
