Suggest An Alternative Pain Medication For Hydromorphone

Thank you so much for being available to talk with me. I have a joint disease that requires me to take pain medication as a part of my pain management plan. I have been successfully using these medications to help with the severe joint pain so I can live my life. However, after being on a medication for some time, it becomes less effective and my doctor and I have to go back to the drawing board when this happens and change pain medications. It seems my body has learned how to process the medication rendering it ineffective. I take a long acting and a short acting both. What are the long acting stronger pain medications similar to Hydrmorphone and Dilaudid? I take higher doses of both daily, and have for 6 years with my disease, Stills disease. It allows me to function, walk, take care of my son and do light exercis like swimming.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You can take Tramadol and Paracetamol combination
You can take Aceclofenac and Paracetamol combination
Apply hot water bag on the affected site
Apply Diclofenac spray at pain site
Go for physiotherapy, which is helpful for you.

If not resolved, then visit pain clinics for consultation. There is specific injection, which is helpful for you. Get well soon.

Take care.
