Suffering From Depression, Taking Cymbalta. Feeling Drugged, Unable To Work. Should I Change Antidepressant?

A friend of mine has been on 60 mgm. CYMBALTA for one month now.
As recently as 4 days ago, she woke in the morning & felt so 'drugged' that she was unable to go to work.
[ 'Drugged ' = chemically wiped out. not suffering from the exhaustion of depression.]
What do you suggest ? Reduction ? Change the anti-depressant ?
cheers, david hicks [ Melb].

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi David.
Cymbalta is duloxetine, an antidepressant drug. It is usually prescribed within a dose range of 30-60 mg in general clinical practice. Common side effects of this drug include feeling of tiredness, feeling weak and unsteady like you would pass out and occasionally confused.
The problem that you mentioned might be due to one of these side effects, or might be a manifestation of the primary disorder which she has been taking this for.
Please get back to the prescribing psychiatrist and do according to his/her advice.

Hope this helps.

Psychiatrist Dr. Shreyas Pendharkar's  Response
Hi. How old is your friend & since when is she taking any kind of antidepressant? if she is regularly taking 60 mg duloxetine (cymbelta) without fail or without any additional drugs other illness then it is unlikely that this sudden drowsiness is due to cymbelta. Hence I suggest to consult your treating doctor, Regards
