Should I Stop Diovan While Taking Metoprolol?

I take diovan for high blood pressure. Yesterday a cardiologist prescribed metoprolol for angina but said nothing abut whether this was to be taken with diovan or in place of it. I can t reach him and it s a long weekend. Should I stop the diovan until I get instructions from the cardiologist?

Hello,

probably not but it depends on your usual blood pressure levels. If you've had high blood pressures then stopping diovan and taking the less potent metoprolol might worsen your readings. On the other hand, if you've had low blood pressures (less than 110mmHg systolic) then adding another anithypertensive medication might cause hypotension or symptoms of postural hypotension.

In any case you should contact the cardiologist again for the necessary clarifications. Until then you should follow the aforementioned "rule".

I hope you find my answer helpful!
