Should Valparin Chrono Be Continued?

Hello Doctor, My son is 6.5 yrs old and has been taking valparin chrono for the last 3 years as advised by our doctor. We went to homeopathy doc and he advised to stop the medication as it is affecting him, we have also stopped the medication for the past 2 months. An after thought, I am thinking if it was good idea to stop the medication? Can you please advise or suggest a doctor in chennai with whom we can get a second opinion? Thanks in advance.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your son's symptoms and treatment details.

Valparin chrono (sodium valproate) is an anti-epileptic drug and is used to prevent recurrence of seizures or fits.

Generally, if a child is seizure-free for at least three years, we think of reducing and stopping the drug. However, before stopping the drug, it is better to ensure that brain scan and EEG are normal.

Also, the medication should not be abruptly stopped. The dose should be reduced and stopped over a few weeks to months.

In Chennai, you can consult Dr Pazhani, Neurologist for second opinion.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
