Hi,

Postmenopausal bleeding in a 56 years old woman is a condition to be evaluated. Usually the endometrium will be atrophied during the postmenopausal period and it is expected to be around 4 to 5 mm. And 6 mm is little more than the normal thickness. As you had 16 months of amenorrhea followed by heavy bleeding better to get evaluated.

Hysteroscopy will help in taking the endometrial biopsy as you mentioned and by doing the histopathological examination of that biopsy the possible cause of your postmenopausal bleeding can be identified. Your doctor might have mentioned regarding progestin containing intrauterine device, which is usually called as coil, this will help in controlling the abnormal bleeding.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
