Pregnant. Swelling In Foot, ankle, Numbness In Arms From Shoulders To Fingers. History Of Travel, Lot Of Water Intake. Carpel Tunnel Syndrome?

I'm 19 weeks pregnant, flew back to mainland from Hawaii. After flying just my left foot/ankle is quite swollen. I drank 4 liters on the plane ride back, and drink alot of water usually. How many days until the swelling in my foot goes down. And since going to Hawaii, I think I have carpel tunnel syndrome as both my right and left arm keep going numb from Shoulder down to thumb/pointer/middle. Thanks-Brianna

Hi Brianna,

Based on the information you are 19weeks pregnant and flew to hawaii, had lot of water and now having a swelling in arms and having numbness in thumb/pointer and middle finger and thinking about is it a carpel tunnel syndrome and wanted to know how long will it take to get the swelling resolved.

The answer to your question is YES it does seems like a carpel tunnel syndome, and it will resolve as soon as the swelling goes away. Now the question is how long the swelling stays , and answer to that question depends upon your kidney function. It will go away in 2 day time normally.

Advice-
1) Please consult your OGBYN if swelling stays for longer then 2 days.
2) Please don't fly in 3 trimester.

Hope it helps.
Thanks.

Hi, Thanks for using HCM.

Swelling of foot during pregnancy is common, if you travel for long distance. that will normally reduce by sleeping on left lateral side.
If your swelling doesn't reduce, get your BP measurement done, and urine routine for protein levels and kidney function test, LFT, need to evaluate for hypertension during pregnancy.
Pain in arm could be due to edema causing pressure over nerve.
Hope I answered your question. Consult your doctor for further examination and management.
Feel free to ask me if you have any further queries.
Wish you good health. Take care.

Regards
Dr. Vidya
