Painful Leg, Pressure Sensation. Is It Arthritis Or Osteoporosis?

I have had pain in my right leg, where it meets the body. It doesn't hurt to put pressure on it. It only hurts when
I sleep and turn on my side or when I get up from sitting. I have not hurt it either. Could it be arthritis or osteoporosis? I am 56 and female and active (i have 15 acres). It is not my siatica because I've had that before. And can a general doctor see me for this or should I go to an orthopedic. My internal medicine doctor hasn't seen me for this but says I should see an orthopedic. Thanks, Jana

Hello,
Thank you for contacting healthcare magic. Since you are women and also in 6th decade ( 56 Years) , you are at risk of both Osteoporosis and Arthritis. Usually person with osteoporosis suffer from fracture in even ground level fall. Thus Osteoporosis patients present with fractures. You have pain in Hip joint. Most probably it is Osteoarthritis. So please take Xray pelvis and consult orthopedician.

General & Family Physician Dr. Polash Sannigrahi's  Response
Dear Jana,

Both arthritis & osteoporosis will present with pain associated with change in posture or movements.
It can be distinguished with the help of proper clinical examination & certain investigations like X ray of the affected joint, serum calcium & Vit D assay.

Other reasons can be muscle spasm, soft tissue (ligament or tendon) injury, dietary deficiency of essential vitamins & minerals required for strengthening of bones, metabolic & hormonal causes, etc.
So, kindly consult an Orthopedician & discuss regarding this.
Based up on that, appropriate management steps could be taken.

There is no need to worry, you will be fine.
Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
