Pain In The Arm After Blood Donation. Is It Normal?

Hi. My name is Mark. I am 40 and I have been giving blood regularly since I was 18. I normally use my right arm because it has the best vein. Recently, the woman drawing my blood noticed multiple pricks in my right arm and she told me to use my left arm for a while to avoid scare tissue. The last couple of times I have used my left arm, but now I am starting to feel pain under the vein in my right arm where they would draw the blood. Is this normal? I haven't donated from my right arm in over a year. It mainly hurts when I fully extend my arm.

Dear Sir,

Sorry to hear about your problem. The symptoms which you are describing suggest that you have developed a thrombophlebitis of the right arm vein. This can occur after multiple pricks and leads to pain especially in the extended position. You can also feel a cord like structure in the extended position. Fortunately, this condition subsides on its own over a period of time.

Hoping for the best.
