Pain And Pus Formation On The Toe. Recurring Under Nail Infection. Cure?

My big toe started hurting a couple days ago and today after my shower when I pressed on the skin superior to the cuticle a lot of orangy brown fluid came out (I m assuming icky puss). About 5 years ago the same thing happened and my tonail ended up breaking off and a new one would grow under it for a while until the same infection symptoms would appear and the tonail would again break off. I ended up having multiple layers of toenails and this continued for a little over 2 years. Is there anything I can do to lessen the symptoms and prevent the same cycle of events from occurring again?
