What causes swelling base of nail and raised cuticle?

17 year old son, no trauma, has on right great toe: swollen read area at base of nail on top toe. Cuticle is proper color but raised from nail. There seems to be a bit of pus and a slightly flaky fleshy tissue under cuticle and skin. Not real painful unless pressed hard. Cuticle and fleshy pus area not painful. Condition present for several weeks.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi,

It may be paronychia. Consult the dermatologist for the perfect diagnosis and proper treatment. A short course of antibiotic and antiinflammatory drugs may be considered. Improve the immunity by giving nutritious food, exercise and immune booster to prevent the relapse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilyas Patel, Dermatologist
