On Metoprolol For Blood Pressure, But It Is Getting Worse. Am I Over Medicated ?

Hi I'm 38 male,6'2, 227lb and taking 200mg of metoprolol and 5mg of norvasc. I take my bloodpressure two-three time a day usually ranges from 95/65 -107/70. I recently had a stress test done 9/2012 which was normal according to the doctor. I been taking metoprolol for about 12 year and norvasc has been on add two month ago. I wondering if my blood pressure is getting worst because I'm taking more medicine for it and concern that this increases of these medicines are ruining my kidneys over the long term? Also I was told by a nurse during a doctor visit that I taking way to high a dose of metoprolol for my age which caused me great pause, is it possible that I'm being over medicated?

Hi, Welcome to HCM.

Antihypertensive medications are usually titrated based on your blood pressure and how resistant it is. Thus your treatment regimen, including the dosage of your individual medication, will be different compared to other patients so it will be difficult to judge whether or not the dose of metoprolol you are receiving is high just based on absolute amount you are taking.

Furthermore, it will be worthwhile to compare your blood pressure before and after you began taking norvasc to understand how much did your blood pressure decease. Looks like your blood pressure at this time is in the normal range, however should it reduce further then I will advise that you consult your primary physician to titrate your antihypertensive medication again.

Also based on the information you have given, looks like your body mass index is 29 kg/sq. m (normal: 19 to 25 kg/sq. m). This means that your weight is higher and it can contribute to your hypertension significantly. I will recommend lifestyle changes such as diet control and exercise, restriction of smoking/alcohol/caffeine if any. This will certainly help control your blood pressure as well.

Hope this helps.
