Need Treatment For Irregular Bowel Movement.

My grandson is 6 years old. He has a problem with his bowels. His bowels will excrete waste and he says that he cannot tell when it s about to happen. When he does have a bowel movement it is extremely long and about 2 inches or larger in diameter. This has been going on about 2 years now and the doctor we took him to said to give him a laxative everyday. I feel there is something wrong with the intestine, stomach, or colon. I ve been on line looking for a pediatric GI but have not been able to find one here in the Charleston, SC area. Can you help.

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your Grandson of 6 years having problem of irregular bowel movements for the last 2 years, kept on laxatives but still can not tell when he is going to have bowel movements which is long and about 2 inches in diameter.
Certainly yes, there is some problem somewhere which needs the following:
First of all, since the boy is 6 years old but the problems started when he was 4 means he was alright till the age of 4.
The possible thing is that the bowel training has got disturbed due to some or the other reasons.
You should start again the bowel training by the following:
Give enema at the certain fixed time in the morning so that the motion starts rolling down at a given time.
Add on a laxative to be taken at night with bowel regulator medication.
Try to find out the foods and beverages that cause constipation in this boy so that these are avoided strictly.
If these measures fail in one to two months he will need colonoscopy and biopsy to rule out any nerve deficiency.
Also check for blood sugar as juvenile diabetes can cause similar problems.
Ans to follow the advise of the Gastroenterologist or Pediatric Surgeon as the case may be .
