Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. If he is on mechanical ventilation, the cause needs to be identified.
2. Diabetes, as such does not cause respiratory failure. Secondary complications like infections or ketoacidosis could cause respiratory failure.
3. Control of blood sugar and treating the complications are the only possible options. If its controlled, then he should be able to recover.
