Knee Pain, Limping After Snowboarding Accident. Bone Bruised, Mild Sprain. Did Physical Therapy. What Kind Of Brace Required?

I had a snowboarding accident in which I messed up my knee. I had an MRI after 2 weeks of compression wrap, horrible pain, and limping everywhere. It was said that it was a bone bruise, and a mild sprain. This happened in January, and my knee still hurts! I have basketball coming up and I'm afraid I will not be able to play, seeing as just laying here on my couch my knee is giving me a lot if pain, about a 6 or 7 on a scale from 1-10. I did do physical therapy for months and months but I was denied more sessions. On my last session I was told to get a brace for when I get back to school for PE and basketball. What kind of brace do I get, that is cheap (not a lot of money available for spending), and why is it still hurting so much!?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi,

Treatment for a knee problem or injury may include first aid measures, rest, bracing, physiotherapy, medicine, and in some cases surgery. Treatment depends on the location, type, and severity of the injury as well as your age, health condition, and activity level (such as work, sports, or hobbies).

Avoid high-impact exercise, such as running, skiing, snowboarding, or playing tennis, until your knee is no longer painful.

There are many types of knee braces, from soft fabric sleeves to rigid, metal hinged braces, that support and protect the knee. If your doctor has recommended the use of a knee brace, follow his or her instructions. If you are using a knee brace to help prevent problems, follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.

I do hope that you have found something helpful.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, bone bruises and mild grade 1 sprains will heal spontaneously within 3-4 weeks with adequate immobilization.

It is very unlikely to have pain in the knee after so many months after injury. I suggest you to get a repeat MRI scan for your knee to know the recent developments or problems.

A simple hinged knee brace will give adequate support to the collateral ligaments of the knee permitting knee bending activities.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
