Is Travel Advisable While Suffering With Facial Swelling?

My face has swollen up. I have what looks like a bite on my cheek. I am up in the mountains miles away from any doctor. I took one Zirtec last night and the swelling came down a bit. It was up again this morning so I took another. I have taken a second Zirtec now. Is it safe for me to fly home to Ireland tom

Hello,

From the location you have mentioned and the sign of insect bite on cheek, it seems that you are suffering from an allergic reaction to the insect poison. You can continue with the Zirtec once a day. I advise you to continue it for at least five days.

Travelling by air seems no problem in allergic reaction. As far as you feel able physically to travel and if the swelling has not worsened, there is no need to cancel or delay your journey. I should point out that you might feel some pressure in swollen areas during the flight descent as the fluid inside the swelling might cause pressure due to major atmospheric pressure changes inside and outside the body. You can take Paracetamol (Crocin) 500 mg about an hour before the flight lands. This medicine is available over the counter. Do not take it if you are allergic to it.

If you do not find relief in swelling in two to three days, visit a physician for physical examination as there are number of other reasons that can cause facial swelling.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. I wish you safe travels.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
