Is There Any Treatment For Prostatomegaly Other Than Surgery?
My father is aged 69. For the past few years, at night he is in urge to pass urine frequently. For the past few months, this frequencey increased very much and he had to pass urine every 1 hour. Even in the day time, he had to go every 1.5 hour or so. This is causing loss of sleep to him. Now, the doctor had advised to take Blood Test, Urine test and Ultra Sound. Below is the report Summary. 1. Cholelithiasis (Gall Bladder is well distended with normal wall thickening. Shows a calculus in the neck measuring 18.5mm) 2. Prostatomegaly (Enlarged in size, measures 53 CC) Doctor has advised for surgery for both of these. I have these questions 1. Is there any remedy without surgery? 2. What is the approximate cost for these surgeries? 3. My sister-in-law (who is a medical student) says gall bladder stones measuring less than 25 mm does not need immediate surgery 4. How many days of hospitalization does it require?

I have read the medical report of your father and i will try to explain at your questions according to the results of the ultrasound.
1. Cholelithiasis (Gall Bladder is well distended with normal wall thickening. Shows a calculus in the neck measuring 18.5mm)
The only way to treat cholelithiasis is surgery. In the case of your father, this finding in the ultrasound was random,so since he has no pain,or other symptoms no reason to have an immediate surgery. But he is advised to have the surgery before it gives other complications. He can decide when to do the surgery.
2- My sister-in-law (who is a medical student) says gall bladder stones measuring less than 25 mm does not need immediate surgery.
All stones,doesn't mater the size,without symptoms or without infection don't need immediate surgery. But need other tests to see the liver and pancreas enzymes, some other blood test to determine if this stone is giving any problem or not at your fathers body.
3-Surgery for the problem of his prostate. Well your father needs to do some other tests, like blood test PSA (specific test for the prostate), digital rectum exam,and a consult with an urologyst. Prostatomegaly can be cured by surgery or with medications. His urologyst will decide what is the best option for your father after he has done a consult.
4-Hospitalization: laparoscopic cholecystectomy usually needs 1 or 2 days top days of hospitalisation. Surgery of the prostate with TUR-P (transurethral resection of the prostate) needs around 2 -3 days top. (of course depending if there are or on complications post surgery)
5-I don't have any information about the prices,but you can always ask at your hospital.
So my advice, talk with a urologist for the prostate, and with a general surgeon for the gallbladder. At the moment,he needs an immediate treatment for the enlarged prostate.
