what are some of the long term physical effects of an oophorectomy. my wife is experiencing pain in the lower abdomen right behind the incision spot. she had an oophorectomy several years ago. I m afraid this might be scar tissue. it is a lingering, dull, nagging pain. when she sneezes, the pain is intensified.

The most important long term effects of an oophorectomy have to do with decreased hormones and menopausal effects. However, the pain you are describing may be due to scar tissue, although there are many other possibilities as well. Muscle or nerve related pain may be the cause, or possibly even other processes within the abdomen such as cysts or gastrointestinal problems. Your doctor may be able to tell from an exam what is going on, and maybe even a CT scan could help if your doctor believes it is warranted. If indeed it is scar tissue, it can sometimes be removed with a laparoscopic surgery, but you need to discuss this with your doctor, as every case is different.
