Is There A Beta Blocker That Would Cause Less Acid Related Side Effects?

Is there a beta blocker that would cause less acid related side affects? My mother takes Metoprolol for heart arrhythmia (in addition to other medications for heart -has had a heart cath-and high blood pressure). She has trouble with acid reflux normally, was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia years ago, but since starting on the beta blocker her acid reflux has increased exponentially (she is experiencing EXTREME acid related issues) to the point that she almost doesn t want to eat because the pain she experiences when she does is so severe. However, not taking the beta blocker causes her heart arrhythmia to exacerbate. Are their alternate BB that I could have her inquire/request her doctor try her on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Actually all beta blockers cause heartburn to some extent, but it might be due to hiatal hernia. Hiatal hernia itself causes acid reflux. Surgical correction is needed for severely symptomatic hiatal hernia
Advice
1.     Omeprazole 20 mg per oral empty stomach in the morning for 15 days
2.     Continue metoprolol as suggested
3.     Avoid smoking and alcohol if she is consuming
4.     Do not heavily at a time. Divide your meals into smaller portions and eat them frequently during the day
5.     Avoid a particular food if pain occurs particularly after eating that food
6.     Avoid eating 3 hours before lying down
7.     Raise the head of your bed
8.     Avoid spicy foods, fatty foods, mint, chocolate, tomato-based foods, coffee, and citrus fruits
9.     Investigation –Barium meal X – ray
If above measures do not cause any relief then consult a gastrointestinal surgeon for possible surgical correction of hiatal hernia.
