Is The Surgery Not Done On Anterior Talofibular Ligament?
My doctor recently sent me for an MRI of my foot. Before I left his office he told me that he thought I would have a torn ligament & he just didn t know how bad of a tear until I have a MRI. He also said I may have waited a little to late to come have it checked out.We may have to try PT or may have to have surgery. Then sent to have my MIR. He later called to report that I have a torn anterior talofibular ligament he suggested that I try PT for the next month and report back to him. But, the PT told me that they usually Don t do surgery on an Anterior talofibular ligament. Is that true? I still have some swelling & lots of pain ....I also wear a boot to hold my ankle in place. I just Don t want to do months of PT then later be told I need surgery when I can go ahead with surgery and begin healing. I m so use to being active and now I can t. Hope u can help answer my questions. Thanks
Till time you can continue use supportive splint or brace. Physiotherapy like ultrasound and TENS will help in early healing. Persistent pain after ankle injury is common and may take 6 months to heal.
If there is complete ligament tear on lateral aspect then arthroscopic ankle ligament repair can be done. ATFL only injury may not require surgery.
Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.
Wishing you good health.
