Is Taking Metformin, Controlling Diet And Exercise The Right Treatment For Diabetic Papillitis?

I am a 74 year old female. Last Jan I was diagnosed with a swollen optic nerve by my opthmalogist. After being seen by a neurologist and undergoing various eye tests and MRI, spine puncture, I have been given a diagnosis of diabetic papilloplitis. Since the swelling is going down in optic nerve and not too much more loss of sight, no further recommendations are being made. My diabetis Type 2 of five years has beebcontrolled by a primary care doctor - A1c is about 6.5 - just started 100 gm of Metformin after having been maintained by diet and exercise. Should I be seeking more medical intervention?

Dear Madam, there is a slight confusion in your treatment history about the drug dosing.I guess you mentioned about 1000 mg and not 100 grams.Generally for any ophthalmic conditions associated with diabetes we would prefer the patient to be on insulin for a better fine tuning. But on your case you have been very lucky to have a very good sugar control and since your ophthalmologist is happy I dont think you need to do anything else, but to maintain the sugar values under normal level. Wishing you the best.
