Is Swelling Above Temple A Cause For Concern In A Bipolar Person?

Girlfriend is bi polar and we are currently traveling from au in Amsterdam, 5 days ago she had a fit and smacked her head a bunch and after the episode the end result is left side of her face and above temple bruised, 2 days later it happened again and we think that postponed healing. Little bits of ice held and pain killers for 4 days have been remedy, with head being elevated and no signa of any serious brain or concussive damage. But its swollen and the swelling had gotten worse these past 2 days. Shes now emotionally stable but Its scarying me looking at her face. I am afraid shes got more serious damage then she thinks as i have never seen this happen before and as shes had no signs of internal damage she is refusing to go to the doctor while here. What should i do? We leave in a week for finland and its a total of 14 days before we re home again through alot of flights. Thanks very much!

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

It appears that she had a scalp injury and this will take to heal. This sort of injury is superficial and involves the upper layers of skin. Any serious problems or brain injury is unlikely.

The injury is not directly related to bipolar disorder. For early healing you can given her over the counter pain relievers and anti inflammatory medicines. If there is any increased in pain then she should be given a course of antibiotics after consulting a doctor. This should not be a limiting factor in your travelling. Please do not worry.
