Is Surgery Necessary For An Umbilical Hernia?

Hi I was diagnosed with an umbilical hernia and have to have surgery. Do I have to have it repaired? I had one almost 4 years ago. No mesh was used the doctor stitched it closed. I can go weeks with no pain but when it hits me the pain is unbearable. I m afraid to go through the surgery again.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The management of hernia is depending on the symptoms one patient is having, together with morphological changes as provided by investigation tests (barium examination, upper endoscopy or even ct-scan).

Please send to me the tests you've done so far to guide you further. For the moment, I can only say to follow your doctor's advice. If decided for surgery as best treatment option for you, should go for surgery. Do not get afraid.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
