Is Steroid Appropriate To Heal Swelling Of Femur And Tibia After Knee Replacement?

I had knee replacement on my right knee 14 months ago. I have continued to have swelling in the tissues though the knee and associated femur, tibia, and fibula xray just fine. My doc finds no clear reason, but it s getting worse. I m a professor and standing on hard floors can cause it to go from a little puffy to really swollen which affects my ability to walk in a negative way. It also is quite uncomfortable. I went back to the doc this week and we re trying steroid pack which I started yesterday. I just got out of class and the tissues all around the knee are very swollen. What are the possible causes of this? What can I do that I haven t done? I usually do much better when I understand why things happen and I don t get this!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

This is just for your information that persistent swelling in the knee joint after total knee replacement (TKR) is not considered as a normal phenomenon. There are numerous causes that may present with similar picture. The commonest cause is infection in the prosthetic knee joint.

So, a detailed clinical examination and appropriate biochemical & radiological investigations are needed to establish the correct diagnosis.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
