Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My dr just called and said my ldl is 137 and my good cholesterol is 40. I am 63 years old weight 128 lbs and 5ft 7 in tall. I fast walk at least 1 mile every day before I go to work. I take no medication except fish oil and vitamins. Should I be concerned about my 137 ldl? What do you suggest.?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.
In simple words, LDL is a bad cholesterol & HDL is good cholesterol. Your LDL level is 137 & is slightly high. Your HDL is 40 & this is normal. I would suggest you to not start cholesterol controlling medicines such as statins. Dietary management of cholesterol is first advised. Consumption of cholesterol & saturated fats should be lowered. Trans fatty acids containing partially saturated fats should be stopped. Intake of fibers in diet should also be increased. Daily exercise should also be continued.
Refer to your physician Hope this information helps
