my girlfriend and i had unprotected sex 7 days ago. 12 hours after I bought the plan b pill, even though I was pretty confident I pulled out (just wanted to be sure) but a week into it and she thinks she has her period but a doctor said there is a chance its spotting. He did a urine sample and could see the lining and indicated that was a good sign to no pregnancy. can you offer any insight
Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. Plan B is an emergency contraceptive pill. Such pills offers 89% protection in preventing pregnancy. It needs to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Earlier it is taken, the chances of protection seems to be better. After taking the pill, it causes withdrawal bleeding in the form of periods within 3 weeks from the day the pill has been consumed. Most females bleed in about a weeks time. In case this doesn't happen, you need to seek medical attention immediately to rule out pregnancy because of pill failure. In any case, to confirm that she wouldn't be pregnant, kindly get the following investigations done: 1. Serum beta-HCG levels. 2. Trans-vaginal ultrasound scan (TVS) of pelvis. Hope the information provided is clear. All the best.
