Is Peritonsillar Abscess Associated With Metallic Taste In The Mouth?
Yes...my husband was diagnosed with Peritonsillar Abscess but was given no antibiotics for it...he was told he would be feeling better in 10-14 days. While the abscess issue is getting better...he has a terrible 'metalic' taste in his mouth and is producing mass amounts of saliva. Will these symptoms go away on their own or can he get something OTC to help either or both?
Well, metallic taste in mouth and excessive saliva production seems to be most probably due to the abscess that can cause irritation in inflammation in throat and mouth.
It causes stimulation of the salivary gland and metallic taste is due to infection only.. There is also possible that there is pus discharge causing metallic taste..
So it is advisable to consult an Emergency Room and get evaluated. A course of antibiotics can be advised to relieve the infection faster. Along with it gargle with antiseptic mouthwash and do warm saline gargles.. Hopefully the symptoms will get better in a week..
For now you can gargle with flavoured antiseptic mouthwash to mask bad taste as well as reduce infection.. Also do warm saline gargles..
Hope this helps...
Regards.
