Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have to use laxatives at least twice a month. I take them when I am not working. I am running out of time before I have to return to work. I need to have a bowel movement ASAP. Someone told me to lay on my left side to speed up the urge. Does this have any medical validity?
Yes, laxatives are advisable for the symptomatic relief of constipation. Scientific studies have shown that sleeping on the left side lets gravity help intestinal contents get from the small intestine to the large intestine and then to the lower colon on the left side.
This increases the likelihood of having bowel movement first thing in the morning.
However in addition you must take lot of dietary fibers in the form of vegetables or fluids, increased physical activity, adequate fluid intake, avoid carbonated soft drinks and high caloric foods which can prevent constipation.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
