Is It Safe To Wean From Metropolol To Diltiazem?

My Dr is switching me from Metropolol 25mg once a day to Diltiazem 120. She is weaning me off the Metropolol. The first day I take both, day 2, just Diltiazem. Day 3, both, day 4 just Diltiazem, day 5 both then after that just diltiazem. is this safe.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
Hi there,

Thanks for your query.

YES. Your doctor has adopted the right approach.
Metoprolol is ALWAYS tapered off gradually. While tapering off, the protective cover was given by Diltiazem (which was being simultaneously).

Sudden stoppage of Metoprolol and other drugs belonging to "Beta-Blockers" group cause a rebound effect, which can even prove to be grave.

If you find my response helpful and informative, do not forget an “excellent” (5-star rating) to my answer, to ENCOURAGE ALL doctors- engaged in social service- to render sound advice to the FREE queries.

Take care
