Is It Safe To Travel By Flight While Suffering With Pulmonary Embolism?

I have been put on Coumadin , and have had a difficult time controlling my correct level. I am not a eat meat eater and live on Kale, Mustard greens, spinach, ( need I go on) My diet up to now has mostly been salads. And as much green leafy veggies I can consume. I am a super picky eater and for some strange reason have to have cottage cheese with every evening meal as well. AND a avocado too! So I am a veggie eater. Sometimes i will have a taste of whatever meat my husband is cooking but i do not need it. BUT MY INR s are crazy. I eat spaghetti squash and other squashes and a ton of other vegetables, Actually whatever vegetable. is being offered, I will eat. But my favorite (oh so favorite is Kale) I can eat a Kale sandwich. I got a DVT from being off my right leg off and on for a few months. Then went to my son s Wedding in August 2014.... took a red eye home.. bumpy trip and I could not get up only once due to the roughness. Got home on Sunday Dr........ did RT knee surgery on Friday.---Saturday was grand home no pain. Sunday did not feel well felt like i was going to faint. and all of a sudden. Was SOB and diaphoretic . My husband called the paramedics ... they had zero idea what was going on. ( country volunteers) But while i was here i had seizures and went in and out of consciousness until i stopped breathing. The paramedics bagged me and got me breathing again. Fast ride to Albany Med. Where they got me stable with Heparin, and took a CT of lungs and a Ultra-sound of RT lower leg. Found the DVT there. Went home on stomach shots then to po coumadin. after three months my primary doctor told me it was fine to go off of the blood thinners. He did another Ultrasound and it came back neg of clot ( nothing was visible ) Then in February we went to Florida. I have been walking on my knee fair. ( the doctors want to put in a new knee) Too many problems at present. But anyway we flew again. I had been feeling well. Not fabulous but well. The day after returning i got SOB and wheezing and edema in my back the morning after not feeling well with the asthma type symptoms. ( or so i thought) When i called my primary because i was feeling so poorly he said to go to the Hospital ER right then and there..,He ordered another CT and this small hospital had to send the CT out to get it read...That took 3 hours. ER doc said i had another Pulmonary Embolism. I called my doctor and told him i wanted to go to a bigger hospital with good doctors and he called one in Poughkeepsie and i went down there got admitted and went the same route. Now i want to know ----what are my chances of getting another PE if i go on another airplane. I am going to curtail my diet and will not go until i am stable between 2.5 and 3...But i have to be in Seattle the middle of may. For a grandchild s birth... But don t want it to be my death. Should i stick to a train ? what is it with airplanes and clots. Should i attempt the plane ? Is there a correlation between clots and airplanes ? I now have a Cardiologist , and a Hematologist Oncologist working on me. They seem to think i could make the trip.... Personally i am a tad skeptic. Some doctor also said i was borderline...( something about anticoagulant problem) He said i was a border line person ,,But never explained.

Hi,

Pulmonary embolism patients should not air travel when left untreated. After taking treatment suggested by expert, and well controlled, the travel should be delayed for minimum 4 months symptomless. Inform your health insurance about your health problem. Let the air crew know if you get symptoms, so that emergency landing can be arranged for your expert treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
