Is It Safe To Prescribe Lexapro For A 20 Year Old?

Hello! My 20 year old daughter was just put on Lexapro and it does nothing helpful for the original symptoms. She began with 5 mg for 1 week and has been on 10 mg for 2 weeks. We want her off and have sought psychological help instead. I am sure the PCP meant well, but psychotrophic drugs should not be the first course of action in my opinion. Thanks for your advice!

Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. SWARNAVA DATTAGUPTA answering your query.

See, first off all, I don't know what kind of symptoms your daughter was having. Also the duration and severity of the symptoms is also unknown to me. Now, nexapro is escitalopram and is used in anxiety and depression. But all psychiatry drugs take some time to act. You need to wait for a month to check for improvement. Also I believe drugs and psychotherapy should go simultaneously to give the best result.
Anyways I think you should continue the medicine and wait for a couple of weeks. Or come up with answers to my query and I would be able to help you further.

Hope this was helpful.
Regards
