Is It Safe To Have A Mantoux Test While Pregnant?

Is it safe to have a Mantoux test while pregnant? I just found out that I am three weeks pregnant. I ve been told wait until I am past my first trimester. What exactly are they injecting into the body when seeing if you are a carry of TB? Thank You!

Mantoux test is one type of skin test is done by injecting a small amount of fluid (the tuberculin antigen) under the skin of the forearm. Two to three days later, the site of the injection is checked by your doctor for any reaction.

If your skin test is positive, you will need a chest x-ray to rule out the possibility of active tuberculosis.

If your chest x-ray shows any evidence of tuberculosis, your sputum should be tested for tuberculosis.

If your sputum is positive or your chest x-ray is highly suspicious for TB, it is must to treat you for tuberculosis during pregnancy so that your baby is not born with tuberculosis.

On the other hand, this screening test is not going to cause you to get TB. It does not affect your baby also.
