Is It Safe To Have Niftran 100 Mg For Prolong Usage?

Hi - Is it safe to have Niftran 100 mg for prolong usage...Had severe UTI and Urolysis in October 2012 and was admitted in ICU for 10 days. Advised on long term preventive measure i.e. Niftran 100 mg once daily since ten till date(9 months) and still continuing...serum creatinine=1.2....is this safe to be continued as have a recurrent UTI issue and the month we stop, there is UTI and hence continuing...but is it safe to be continued along this line, please?

Yes may be unsafe for long term use at this dose.
You have reduce your dose to half to avoid side effects.
Possible side effects of long term use of Nitrofurantoin are
1. Chronic Hepatitis, it may become active at any time
2. chronic pulmonary reaction like fibrosis
3. Peripheral neuropathy is also possible.

So if it is essential to take Nitrofurantoin, regular monitoring of Liver function an lung function are vital.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Now a days nitrofurantoin ( niftran 100 mg) is used only for E. coli infection ( rather restricted).
Niftran is a bacteriostatic , so in my opinion its long term use will develop resistance .
In my opinion get in urine culture with blood culture and drug sensitivity test and get treatment .
Consult one more doctor( urologist ) and his opinion ( 2nd).
