Is It Safe To Have Espiride For Milk Production While Breast Feeding?

My doctor has prescribed espiride (the generic of eglonyl) for helping increase my milk production. I am 9 weeks postpartum (Caesarian section) and have struggled with low milk supply from the beginning. Please can you tell me How much of the espiride drug is secreted into the breast milk, and also what are the effects of espiride on my baby. I have justed started taking 50mg of espiride 3x a day, and have noticed that after being on the tablets for 3 days that my baby is sleeping more than usual. Is this normal or something I should be concerned about. Thanks so much.Anita

Hello Anita,

I would like to welcome you to Health Care Magic, and congratulate you for your baby. I understand your concern.

Though Espiride does increase milk supply, there are other, better options. If I was your treating doctor, I would recommend that you see a lactation consultant to explore non medication options before you take medication to improve your milk supply, evaluation and correction of any modifiable factors such as frequency and thoroughness of breast emptying. If all these factors are evaluated, than Espiride would be a good possible treatment choice for increasing milk production. Espiride is a strong neuroleptic antipsychotic drug; however, several studies using smaller doses have found it to significantly increase prolactin levels and breastmilk production in smaller doses that do not produce overt neuroleptic effects on the mother.
A lot of studies have shown that espiride is an effective treatment for inadequate lactation in the puerperium and no serious side effects for infants have been reported. Being that a small amount of the drug passes to the breast milk, there has been reported drowsiness as side effects.

I hope I answered to your question. I wish to you and your baby a healthy life.
