Is It Safe To Have Digoxin Along With Tikosyn When Diagnosed With Afib?

My Dad is 80 years old with A-fib. He was put on Tykison. His heart went back into rhythm for while, but is now back to A-fib. They have added Digoxin (brand name: Lanoxin) to the mix. Are there any added dangerous side effects because of the added medication mixing with Tykison? He is also on a blood thinner. How toxic is this mix of drugs to my Dad s body?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is not safe to take digoxin while on tikosyn. Tikosyn is an anti-arrhythmic drug commonly prescribed to treat atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.

Based on the history your father seemed to have rapid A-fib for which his doctor added digoxin.

Taking digoxin while on tikosyn may affect the rhythm of the heart causing irregular heartbeats, chest tightness, blurred vision or nausea.

Your father may need a dose adjustment or special test if he takes both medications and should be carefully observed any symptoms as listed above.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
